Staff, challenge visitors to hone their observation skills. Tours can be tailored to fit the needs and interests
of your group.

is fully accessible and welcomes visitors with special needs.
Each tour uses observations, interactive inquiries and critical
thinking exercises as tools to experience the visual arts. Studio activities
reinforce tour concepts through creative and engaging hands-on art projects.
Call for details regarding grade-specific goals and objectives. The Museum will
be happy to work with you to design tours and studio activities to connect to
your curriculum and meet your specific needs

Pre-K -12th
grades - $3.00 for 1 hour tour; $3.50 for ½ hour tour w/studio
College - $4.00 for 1
hour tour
Senior Adults - $4.50
for 1 hour tour
Adults - $5.00 for 1

There is a minimum
charge of $30 per tour.
The Museum will send a letter confirming the date and time of your visit,
which includes an invoice for the tour cost, bus parking information and
materials to help prepare your class for their visit.
Teacher and Student Tours
for the 2009-2010 School Year
The Asheville Art Museum invites students and teachers
to investigate the important role which art plays in life and learning through guided
tours of Museum exhibitions and participation in studio activities.
Tours are designed for grades K-12 to reinforce North Carolina Standard
Course of Study curriculum objectives in Visual Arts, Social Studies, Math and
Language Arts.
Tours
Each age appropriate tour includes a visit to the Museum's permanent
collection galleries or special exhibitions on view, if applicable. A
guided tour will last 1 hour, or 1 ½ hours if participating in a studio
activity. Please allow additional time for check-in and travel.

Art + Artists of North Carolina
Through artwork on exhibition in the Museum's permanent collection and
special exhibition galleries, students will learn about the rich history of
visual art in North Carolina.
Students will be exposed to the variety of working artists and their important
role in our community and our state. This tour is for grades K through 12.
Discovering Art
Using artwork on view in the Museum's permanent collection and special
exhibition galleries, your students will discover artwork created by American
artists in the 20th and 21st centuries. Discussion will include a variety of
works from regional and national artists. Students will investigate how artists
use different media like painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking.
This tour is for grades Pre-K - 12.
More Than Math
Your students will explore the hidden world of mathematics and art. Through artwork on view, students will explore how artists use mathematics
such as solid geometry, numbering systems and spatial relationships. Click here for more information on this tour.
This tour is for grades 3 through 8.
See + Say
Your students will experience a fun, enlightening and enjoyable way to
develop language skills while studying art, without ever realizing it is an
English lesson. Students will use visual prompts to discuss and describe art,
enhancing communication skills, vocabulary and narrative techniques. This tour
is for grades K through 5.

Make sure that you ask for your FREE
"Discovering Art" Pre-Visit Packet for Educators.
The "Discovering Art" packet is written for K-12th grade
teachers in any subject area. This educational guide is designed in conjunction
with the "Discovering Art Tour" to help teachers encourage students to become
engaged in visual art and to make the most of their visit to the Asheville Art Museum
through pre- and post- visit lesson plans which includes a set of color poster
images from the Asheville
Art Museum's Permanent
Collection. The packet can be used with any of our tours so be sure to ask for
the "Discovering Art Packet" when you make a reservation.
One chaperone for every ten students is requested and will be admitted free.
Teachers, parents and bus drivers are considered as chaperones. Chaperones are
expected to stay with their group at all times and are responsible for ensuring
appropriate behavior from their group.
Nametags are required for each member of a group. Nametags help to identify
tour groups and enhance interaction between the docent and group members.
PTA/PTO Reimbursement
The James G.K. McClure Educational and Development Fund, Inc. has approved
the Asheville Art Museum's in-house and outreach
school programs for matching grants. PTA/PTO funds can be reimbursed one-third
of visit costs from the McClure fund. One important stipulation is that the
money spent must be locally raised PTA/PTO funds. To apply for reimbursement,
send a copy of the canceled PTA/PTO check to: Mr. John Agar, Jr., Hickory Nut
