Adam Welch (1925-1985) was born in the Big Cove Community on the Qualla Boundary. It was not until Welch retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs that he discovered his woodcarving talent. He is most noted for his masks, but he also carved various animals. “It takes a lot of time and a lot of practice to carve. If I had to make money off the first few carvings that I did, I’d never do it.” While he has thought about quitting several times, people continue to encourage him.
