Lagniappe: An Introduction to Some Musical Friends of John Heliker
A performance by Pianist John Cobb
One of Asheville’s premier interpreters of contemporary music, Dr. John Cobb, will present an informal concert in the Appleby Memorial Foundation Gallery at the Asheville Art Museum, where the exhibition John Heliker: The Order of Things, 60 Years of Paintings and Drawings is on view through May 2. The program will include works by mid-20th century composers from the International Society of Contemporary Music with whom Heliker was associated, including Lou Harrison, John Cage and Samuel Barber, among others.
Dr. John Cobb earned his Doctor of Music Degree in piano performance at Northwestern University. Simultaneously he held a fellowship at the University of Chicago, where he pursued his doctoral studies in Musicology. Dr. Cobb is known as an international performing artist praised by the New York Times for his excellent technique and bronze tone. He is a direct musical descendant of Franz Liszt through his teacher, pianist Claudio Arrau, whose teacher was a pupil of Liszt. He presents master classes on piano technique and literature, and frequently serves as an adjudicator for competitions and music festivals. Dr. Cobb maintains private studios in Fairview and Hendersonville.
