Harriet Joor’s Designs for Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman Workshops
Maggie Dimock, Textile Curatorial Assistant at Winterthur Museum in Delaware, will share her research on pottery and textile artist Harriet Coulter Joor (1875-1965). Joor designed many of the needlework household textiles sold by American Arts and Crafts impresario Gustav Stickley through his company the Craftsman Workshops. Dimock will examine Joor’s contribution to the aesthetic conventions of American Arts and Crafts textiles in the early 20th century and consider how her published design articles helped to establish the prevailing stylistic conventions of Arts and Crafts textiles in the United States. After Ms. Dimock’s talk, enjoy a reception and tour the Museum’s exhibitions on your own. Please contact the Museum for reservations at 828.253.3227 or purchase online (members / non-members).
Held in conjunction with the Grove Park Inn Arts + Crafts Conference.
