Spotlight Series: Message + Medium
May 20 - June 25, 2017
Asheville Art Museum On the Slope (175 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville 28801)
In conjunction with Hear Our Voice, the Spotlight Series features four works from our Permanent Collection that explore how artists express their ideas about contemporary social issues through the medium of printmaking. Printmaking allows artists to produce multiple copies of the same image, often easily and economically. Through their prints, they can disseminate messages in a variety of ways. Some choose to work together with other like-minded artists in collectives. Artists who work separately but unite for a cause can create artists portfolios that bring together multiple mediums to make a statement. Non-traditional forms of visual communication can also send a message, such as printing on clothing, posters and stickers. Whether an artist prints a single image or multiples, or work by themselves or in collaboration with others, printmaking has been and continues to be an important form of artistic communication.
