Spotlight Series: Method + Medium

May 20 - June 25, 2017

Asheville Art Museum On the Slope (175 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville 28801)

In conjunction with Hear Our Voice, the Spotlight Series features works from the Permanent Collection in which artists convey messages through a variety of artistic media.

The four works in Message + Medium explore how artists expressed their ideas about contemporary social issues through the medium of printmaking. Printmaking allows artists to produce multiple copies of the same image, often easily and economically. Through their prints, they can disseminate messages in various ways. Some choose to work together with other like-minded artists in collectives. Artists who work separately but unify behind a cause can create artists portfolios that bring together multiple media to make a statement. Non-traditional forms of visual communication can also send a message, such as printing on clothing, posters, and stickers. Whether an artist prints a single image or multiples by themselves or in collaboration with others, printmaking has been and continues to be an important form of artistic communication.
