Myrtice West (1923-2010) is a self-taught artist born in Alabama. The beginnings of her art relate to a personal tragedy. For years, she and her husband had wanted a child, but doctors told her she was incapable of conceiving. During this period, West turned to painting and drawing for therapy. After several years, West's prayers were answered, and she had a daughter. Sadly, as a young adult, West's daughter was brutally murdered. West had a previous interest in biblical stories, however, this increased after the tragedy and is reflected in her work.
