Joseph Konopka (1932- ) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is known for painting city streets and other sites that are normally associated with crowds and loud noises. However, his paintings make the viewer feel that time has stopped. The artist states "I enjoy painting subjects that make me happy, that make me feel good." Once Konopka chooses a subject, he photographs it from all angles and views and uses the photographs as a starting point for his paintings. His paintings are large scale with pure colors in acrylic on canvas or linen. David Shirey once described Konopka's work as "vigorous compositions with veiled, gauzy colors."
