Robert Cumming (10/07/1943- ) was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. His artwork encompasses drawing, photography, sculpture, and written narrative while examining the connection between object and idea. Cumming moved to the Orange County suburbs of Los Angeles in 1970. He had an abiding interest in crafts and creating things. His photographs attracted considerable attention in the 1970s. He was a visiting artist at many institutions throughout the United States between 1974 and 1986. He moved to Northern Connecticut in 1978. By then he had begun to write and illustrate his own books. He began to experiment with ink drawings based on his earlier sculptures, and realized that the drawings were suitable as works in their own right.
