Nissan Engel (1931- ) was born in Israel. He moved to France in 1957 and specialized in stage design and costume projects while studying at the Centre Dramatique de I'est in Strasbourg. He also began working almost exclusively with oil paints. In 1965, Engel moved to New York City and was commissioned to make a series of stained-glass windows for synagogues there and in New Jersey and Maryland. Influenced from this experience, Engel began painting in a collage motif.
