Tim Barnwell

Timothy Barnwell (02/17/1955- ) was born in Franklin, North Carolina.  He started taking  photographs at age 10, when he bought a camera from his uncle.  He was the chief photographer for the yearbook of the University of North Carolina at  Asheville from 1974 to 1975.  He served as Executive Director of the Appalachian Photographic Workshops based in Asheville, NC from 1980 to 1988.Barnwell's background is photojournalism:  he has had over sixty articles and one thousand  photographs published to date.  Barnwell is strongly affiliated with the regional art of North Carolina. He has worked as a commercial photographer since 1988 and has a studio in downtown Asheville.  His work has been widely exhibited in the region, and is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Orleans Musuem of Art, the Greenville County Museum of Art, Western Carolina University, Mars Hill College, and R.J. Reynolds Industries. His book, "the Face of Appalachia" was published by W.W. Norton Books, 2003.
