Seong Moy (1921- ) was born in Canton, China. He moved to St Paul, Minnesota at age ten. By age 14, he was enrolled in a WPA Federal Art Project School. In 1941, Moy won scholarships at the Art Students League and Hans Hoffman's school, which brought him into direct contact with the modernist movement that was evolving in the city. He melds eastern and western art, ideas, and heritage into his paintings and woodcuts. Moy's early works were brilliantly colored spiraling figures; later his work became more muted in color with less turbulent forms and movement.
