Neil Noland (1927- ) was born in Asheville, North Carolina. He studied sculpture and ceramics at several institutions. Neil was the last of the three Noland brothers to attend Black Mountain College (1949-50). His sculptural works often feature corrugated surfaces, and though they may seem simple in form they possess a rich and evocative presence. In one artist's statement Noland wrote, "I consider my work a melding of painterly concerns and sculpture. Factors of painting and sculpture can inter-change: color areas can appear flat in the picture plane and then read as a physical presence defining shapes and form."
