Jose De Rivera (1904-1985) was born in Louisiana in 1904. He learned to work with metal from his father. When he was 24 he began to study drawing at the Studio School in Chicago with John Warner Norton, a painter who was well-known for his work in Chicago. De Rivera became a sculptor, and was a member of the Sculptors Guild (based in New York City).
