Ben Hall ( - ) was born in Haywood County, North Carolina. His father was a farmer, and his mother sang old, narrative ballads. Ben was one of four boys, and the family moved to Buncombe county when the boys were still young. Ben and his brothers George and John moved to the Brasstown area around 1920. Ben and two of his brothers (Elisha and John) were wood carvers, who passed their skills onto their children and grandchildren.
