Ben Long (1945- ) grew up in North Carolina. While living in Statesville he became influenced by his grandfather, McKendree Long. He began his formal artistic training at the Art Students League in New York. In 1971 he moved to Florence, Italy where he apprenticed with the artist Pietro Annigani for seven years, mastering techniques in oil, tempera and the ancient art of fresco. Long is famous for his eleven frescoes he did in France and Italy and for many frescoes in North Carolina. He recently founded the Fine Arts League of Asheville where he instructs realist artists.
