Throckmorton Pottery

Thomas Throckmorton and his wife purchased Oscar Bachelder’s original Omar Kayyam Pottery in 1940 and reopened it in 1941. They concentrated on art pottery pieces and produced mostly molded mugs, bowls, vases, ashtrays and other small commercially glazed items. The ware was generally marked “Throckmorton” in slip. The Throckmortons are an enigma. Most of what is known about them comes from an article in the Asheville Citizen Times published when they reopened the Bachelder pottery. In 1943, they left the area abruptly, leaving much of their property behind.
