Christo and Jeanne-Claude

The artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude are known for temporary artworks that reflect and reinterpret their surroundings; the Museum’s theme for their visit is “Art and Its Environment.”  A husband and wife team, they construct temporary, environmental artworks in rural and urban environments which draw from architecture, sculpture and urban-planning practices.  Their works are mostly made of fabric and are entirely financed by the couple; they do not receive any grants or take money from sponsors so they can retain control over all stages of the project.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s works of art strive to make people aware of their immediate environment and tend to disrupt the mundane qualities of life, questioning the space occupied by humans and their surroundings.  All of their works are environmentally friendly and upon completion, all materials are recycled.  Because of their scale, each project takes many years of planning, surveying, and designing in addition to upholding a constant dialogue with the community to win over popular consent and to gain official approval and required permits. They use these discussions to underline the importance of community involvement and collaboration, understanding that every person involved is essential to make their projects a reality.  For Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the process of planning and design, mixed with dialogue and debate, are integral parts of each project, creating a space for the discussion of the interaction between humans and their environment.

Previous projects include The Running Fence in California, Surrounded Islands in Florida, The Umbrellas, Japan-U.S.A., and The Gates in New York City's Central Park.

Tickets available at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium Box Office. $28 General Admission, $14 Students and $24 Museum Members.
