The Asheville Art Museum is delighted to announce the launch of the Give 100 campaign to make a difference in the lives of Western North Carolina students.
The Van Winkle Law Firm is celebrating its centennial in 2007 and is partnering with the Museum to match any contribution to the Literacy Through Art program dollar-for-dollar up to a maximum of $50,000.
Literacy Through Art is an innovative educational program for Western North Carolina elementary school students that fosters creativity and proficiency in the visual arts, language arts and communication skills.
According to Elaine Waters, a fourth grade teacher at Eastfield Elementary, whose class participated in Literacy Through Art:
"I have noticed that the students pay more attention to details. They are seeing more in book illustrations. During writing instruction, Bobbie Sue commented that some stories are like pictures of winter trees. She said, ‘You have to add the details. You have to turn winter into spring'."
Literacy Through Art is comprised of lessons taught by local artist/educators in the classroom and a visit to the Museum for a gallery tour led by a specially-trained docent and a hands-on studio activity. Based on North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives, Literacy Through Art allows students to process real experience into written personal exploration, improving students' listening, observing, critical thinking, communication and problem solving skills while enhancing their imaginations and creativity.
The program advances education to better prepare our students to effectively enter the work force and incorporates the visual arts into North Carolina public education.
Literacy Through Art was created in 1994 specifically to address the arts education needs of rural Western North Carolina schools and has expanded and evolved over the years serving students in Asheville City, Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell and Yancey County Schools at various times. In 2008, the Museum will create a pilot program with Henderson County Schools.
Won't you give 100 dollars, 100 quarters, 100 dimes, 100 $10 bills or more to the Give 100 campaign and take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity provided by Van Winkle?
Deep budget cuts coupled with already limited resources have forced school districts to further restrict the availability of visual arts curriculum. Creativity in the classroom has become secondary and teachers are limited to utilizing the most basic strategies to address language skills.
Your fully tax deductible gift matched by Van Winkle will greatly help the Museum address these critical needs in the rural and urban schools of Western North Carolina.
