ASHEVILLE, NC —
More than 150 area middle school and high school students were recently honored
by the Asheville Art Museum and the Asheville Area
Section of the American Institute of Architects during a February 3, 2008
ceremony at the Diana Wortham Theatre as part of the Western North Carolina Regional
Scholastic Art Awards.
Students from 20 counties and the City of Asheville
were invited to submit work for this special juried competition. Out of more
than 500 entries, 182 works were recognized by the judges.
The regional program is judged in two groups: Group I
(grades 7-8) and Group II (grades 9-12). The judges carefully viewed each entry
then selected Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention award recipients in
the categories of Art Portfolio, Ceramics and Glass, Computer Art, Design, Digital
Imagery, Drawing, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, Photography Portfolio,
Printmaking and Sculpture.
Five local works were recognized as American Visions Award
nominees and will compete for a National American Visions Medal. Other special awards
presented included the Asheville Art Museum Award, the American Institute of
Architects Award, the AshevilleArt Museum’s Docents’
Award, the North Carolina Art Education Association Award and the Governor’s
Student Excellence Award.
Eighteen-year old Tia Simpson, a senior at North Buncombe
High, was one of several students who took home multiple awards from the
ceremony. Simpson won four honorable mention awards, three silver key awards,
one gold key award and was also the recipient of both the Governor’s Student
Excellence Award and the American Institute of Architects award.
“I was really surprised,” said Simpson, who has submitted
her paintings for the Scholastic competition each year that she has been eligible.
“I’m taking AP drawing art classes at school and this year entered some of my
drawings of architecture around Asheville
of buildings that interested me. Winning the Governor’s Student Excellence
Award is a great honor and I’m excited to take my work to Raleigh this summer, but I am also thankful
for the AIA Award.”
Works receiving Gold Key Awards will be sent to compete in
the National Scholastic Art Awards Program. The winners of National level
Scholastic Art Awards will be invited to an award ceremony in New
York City and will be included in a National Exhibition at the
Corcoran Gallery in Washington,
DC this summer.
The 2008
Western
North Carolina Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibition will remain on
display in Pack Place Community Gallery through Sunday, February 17.
