Literacy Through Art

lta_245Literacy Through Art (LTA) is a school
outreach program for Western North
Carolina counties in which the visual
arts are utilized to explore the language
arts.

The program is supported by annual
contributions from school districts,
grants from private foundations, from
state and federal sources and from
Museum general operating fund
allocations.

Literacy Through Art enables students to become better communicators by becoming better
observers.

Literacy Through Art includes nine, one-hour lessons taught by a Museum art educator
in the school classroom.

Art educators lead students in a variety of expressive hands-on visual art projects, as well
as employ visual and written prompts in creative writing projects.

The tenth lesson in the Literacy Through Art program is a visit to the Asheville Art Museum,
where students participate in a guided gallery tour and complete a hands-on studio project.
