More Than Math

More Than Math
is a program that integrates the visual arts into the 3rd through 8th grade mathematics curriculum using works of art from the collection of the Asheville Art Museum. More Than Math was developed in partnership with the education staff of the Asheville Art Museum; Dr. Grayson Wheatley, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Education, Florida State University; Randy Harter, Math Specialist, Buncombe County School District; and the School of Education of the University of NC at Chapel Hill.

Third through 8th grade classroom teachers are invited each summer to take part in the More Than Math workshop at the Asheville Art Museum. We provide teachers from each grade level with a lesson plan, student workbooks with pre- and post- Museum visit activities, a set of posters for their classrooms, and access to website activities designed for their students. In the school year following their workshop, teachers and their students are provided with a complimentary field trip to the Asheville Art Museum for a guided tour and hands-on studio project.

Sound interesting? Vist the More Than Math website for some fun and interactive exercises.  For questions about More than Math, call (828) 253-3227 ext. 121 or click here.
