Film Screening, Guerrillas in our Midst

This politically-pointed 1994 documentary presents a savvy exploration of the commercial art-world during its boom in the 1980s. The Guerrilla Girls have succeeded in putting racism and sexism on the art world’s agenda and their witty, creative tactics are showcased in this film by director Amy Harrison.

Nancy Sokolove, artist and Adult Programs Manager for the Asheville Art Museum will give an introduction to the work of the infamous Guerrilla Girls and lead a brief discussion afterwards.

During this event, the famous feminist masked avengers will talk about their work, philosophy of activism while campaigning against an appalling lack of ethics in the art world.

Monkey Bizness with the Guerrilla Girls

A founding member of the Guerrilla Girls will lead visitors through the chaotic process of brainstorming, collective give-and-take and larger group input that has helped these anonymous art activists perfect their in-your-face work during the past 20 years. As participants ‘aestheticize their anger,’ they may get some career advice about ethics and the art world along the way.

This 1992 Academy Award nominated film by director Sally Potter is an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel about a woman who lives for four centuries, and experiences those first 200 years as a man. Tilda Swinton stars in this visually-rich feature about a person who transcends boundaries of sex, class and social mores.

Grrly Show
by filmmaker Kara Herold is an 18-minute film about the feminist ‘zine explosion of the 1990s.

Lori Horvitz, Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Women's Studies at UNC-Asheville, will discuss
what evolved out this richly independent feminist media and the way blogs have erupted.

The event will include hands-on workshops with local artists in 'zine-making, blogging, screen printing
and knitting in the spirit of Do-It-Yourself culture.

Frida Kahlo’s life was a beautiful and tragic one that intertwined her painting, politics, sexuality and intense chronic pain resulting from a catastrophic accident. Overshadowed in life by her husband artist Diego Rivera, Kahlo was catapulted after her death to cult status. This 2002 feature starring Salma Hayak and Alfred Molina was nominated for six Academy Awards and won for Best Music Score and Best Makeup.

and Art Spiegelman are coming to North Carolina as part of the Asheville Art Museum's smArt Speak: Distinguished Artist Series.

, NC — The Asheville Art Museum, with generous support from MetLife Foundation and a partnership with the Buncombe County Public Libraries, is proud to announce the creation of the smArt Speak: Distinguished Artist Series and the four phenomenal artists participating in this exciting venture.

 
LAURIE ANDERSON (1947 - )

Hidden Inside Mountains, Laurie Anderson’s new film, presents 12 stories about the way we experience time.

 
KEN FANDELL (1971 - )

In a painterly fashion, photographer Ken Fandell merges his sky images from various locations around the country and Europe into one huge, seamless photomontage.

 
CHARLES MARY KUBRICHT (1946 - )
Charles Mary Kubricht is interested in the complexity of landscape beyond the beauty of a place.
 
KIMSOOJA (1957 - )
Kimsooja's Wind Woman, shot in real time from a moving car along a hillside road in
Hawaii, focuses on the elusive horizon and the space where two worlds intersect.
 
MAYA LIN (1959 - )

Maya Lin captured the attention of the public when, as a senior at Yale University in 1981 she submitted the winning design for the United States Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, D.C.

 
SALLY MANN (1954 - )
Sally Mann's provocative black-and-white photographs of contemporary Southern American landscapes possess a feeling of time past.
 
RICHARD MISRACH (1949 - )
Photographer Richard Misrach’s new series of work is concerned with the process of erosion.
His large-format photographs present rocks and earth as if seen from nature’s perspective.
 
KIKI SMITH (1954 - )

Kiki Smith’s vast body of work encompasses an impressive array of media, methods and materials. Best known for her sculptural work related to the human body, Smith is also fascinated with the interdependent relationship between humans and the natural world.
