Kenyon Cox (10/27/1856-03/17/1919) was born in Warren, Ohio. He was a painter, sculptor, illustrator, writer and lecturer. He studied in Paris and then lived in New York City. He spent a great deal of time writing about art. Cox became an Associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1900, and was made a full member in 1903. His female nudes were shocking to his audience. He thought that “art is not a luxury, it is a civilization.”
