Adult Studio: Exploring Expressive Painting with Soft Pastel
Registration Closed
Soft pastel is the most pure medium for painting using vibrant colors, ability to blend or layer, and a variety of strokes and techniques. This medium is wonderful for exploring color, texture, and design to create beautiful finished paintings. So fun and easy to use! This workshop will offer an introduction or review of the pastel medium and tools, color theory, design, and individual expression. Start with a simple still life and proceed as the workshop dictates to interpretation of other objects and/or photographs of landscapes, as the participant desires. Instruction is flexible to the individuals in the workshop.
Terrilynn Dubreuil has a passion for exploring new places throughout the world and creating original art with a focus on pastel painting, but also uses watercolor, oil, photography, and other media. Joy of life, creative expression, and spiritual sensitivity are the characteristics of the artwork. Color, light, and texture convey a balance between impressionism and realism. A subject, or experience, speaks to the artist and she aims to allow a spiritual interpretation to flow, not from her, but through her.
Beyond a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree she has studied in wide-ranging situations to expand personal knowledge and creative resources. She has taught various media and techniques of art to people of all ages for thirty years. In teaching, she says that she often learns more herself than she shares with her students. Keeping a hand in many types of media helps her instruct students in their personal areas of interest as it expands her own.
She offers pastel and drawing demonstrations, teaches virtual and live workshops and classes, is an instructor for the adult programs department at the Asheville Art Museum, and presents demos and fine art instruction through her YouTube Channel. Local and visiting artists help students of all levels and abilities develop skills in media that reflect techniques and themes featured in the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Classes meet for 3–12 weeks, and are designed for anyone interested in exploring specific media in depth; daylong workshops introduce new media or processes.
