Explore the elements of art and principles of design through the most complex and dynamic subject in nature: the human figure. Take inspiration from works in the Museum’s Collection, photographs, and a live model. Learn the four basic steps to make a figure drawing, and improve drawing skills to achieve good composition.

Instructor Joseph Pearson has been drawing since he was 4 or 5 years old. He believes that drawing speaks to our primal instinct to express the world as we perceive it and provides intrinsic benefits for everyone. His paintings and drawings are featured in private, public, and corporate collections around the country. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in art education, studied at New York’s Art Students League, and has been teaching art for over 40 years. He currently maintains a studio in the River Arts District.

Adult Studio

The Museum's studio program for adults offers a core curriculum in drawing, painting, printmaking, and three-dimensional media, and also explores the intersections between them. Local and visiting artists help students of all levels and abilities develop skills in media that reflect techniques and themes featured in the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Classes meet for 3–12 weeks, and are designed for anyone interested in exploring specific media in depth; daylong workshops introduce new media or processes.
