The Asheville Art Museum invites you to visit for free on Saturday, June 29 between noon–5pm! Come celebrate our exhibition Shifting Perceptions: Photographs from the Collection with an afternoon of creativity and community engagement.

Community Day Schedule

Noon–5pm

  • Free Museum Admission
  • Community Day Games (Museum Plaza, outdoors level 1)
    • Join us on the Museum’s plaza for a delightful assortment of activities, including limbo, connect four, hula hoops, and jump ropes. Celebrate the joys of community and togetherness with us in a fun-filled day of connection!

  • Film: Cara Romero: Following the Light  (Multipurpose Space, level 1):
    • Following the Light explores Cara Romero’s development as a photographer, delves into the Chemehuevi and California Indigenous history that informs her work, includes behind-the-scenes footage of Cara’s shoots, and features interviews with leading Indigenous artists, including herself, husband and famed Pueblo potter Diego Romero, collaborator and artist Leah Mata Fragua (Northern Chumash), and more.

Noon–4pm

  • Portrait Sessions (Windgate Foundation Atrium, level 1)
    • Join The Asheville Camara Club for a free portrait session! Talented local artists will be taking portraits in front the Museum’s installation The Sky Above Here by Ken Fandell.
  • Makerspace: Flip & Fuse (John & Robyn Horn Education Center, level 3):
    • Inspired by works on view in the new exhibition: Shifting Perceptions: Photographs from the Collection, explore the theme “Together/Apart” and paint your own DIY take-home puzzle. Double your fun by creating your own animation with flipbooks and/or stop-motion 2D puppets. Everyone is welcome!

1–3pm

  • Live Music: DJ Mike Martinez (Museum Plaza, outdoors level 1):
    • Enjoy an afternoon of live music on the Museum’s Plaza featuring DJ Mike Martinez!
  • Bubble Photobooth (Terrace/Cafe, level 4)
    • Inspired by the photograph included in Shifting Perspectives, titled Caitlin/Bubble by Carolyn DeMeritt, join us on the rooftop sculpture terrace for an enchanting polaroid bubble photo both. Pick up a free bubble wand and take a polaroid snapshot capturing the essence of Community Day.

1–1:30pm

  • Express tours (Windgate Foundation Atrium, level 1)

    • Discover new artworks and artists on view in Shifting Perceptions during this 30-minute Express Tour led by Museum Volunteer Educators

1:45–2pm

  • Spotlight Talks (Windgate Foundation Atrium, level 1)

    • Learn more about an artist or two featured in Shifting Perceptions during these bite-sized conversations with Museum Volunteer Educators.

2–3pm

  • Local Artist Tour: Reuben Negrón (Windgate Foundation Atrium, level 1)

    • Join Reuben Negrón as he interprets highlights from the exhibition Shifting Perceptions: Photographs from the Collection and shares the relationship between works on view and his paintings. Reuben is an American figurative realist painter known for his narrative watercolors and charcoal drawings. His richly detailed and vulnerable scenes are an examination of the real-world stories and experiences of the people and places they depict. His work, often created in self-contained series’, is grounded in themes of intimacy, identity, memory, and time.

     

3–3:30pm

  • Express tours (Windgate Foundation Atrium, level 1)

    • Discover new artworks and artists on view in Shifting Perceptions during this 30-minute Express Tour led by Museum Volunteer Educators

3:45–4pm
