Viola Spells grew up in Asheville and was exposed to craft at an early age. Her work as a jewelry designer showcases her fascination with the concept of line and pays homage to women who have practiced the art of crochet for centuries. Her bold crochet wire jewelry often incorporates gemstones, crystals, and facet stones, symbolizing the multitude of emotions in every woman’s life. Each work tells a different story, but all are representative of the connection between woven material and the social fabric that create color and comfort in the homes, families, and communities of women around the world. Spells earned an undergraduate degree in metalsmithing and jewelry from East Tennessee State University and is a resident artist at Pink Dog Creative.
