Drawing is much more than a realistic rendering – it is the most uniquely personal and fundamental form of mark-making, as individual as a signature. This six-part drawing class both demystifies drawing for beginners and encourages more advanced artists to practice drawing freely, in order to uncover unusual sources of creative imagery. Students look closely at artists such as Ruth Asawa, Elaine Schmitt Urbain, Jim Dine, and Leonard Baskin, and practice fluidity of line and improvisational thinking that push the boundaries of what a drawing can be. Imagination and chance inform students’ work as they experiment with different drawing media and explore a variety of expressive styles. Weekly classes include slide talks, work sessions, and individual discussions with the instructor. Students leave with 6-10 finished drawings, plus a notebook of techniques and ideas for future projects!

Instructor Pamela Lanza has an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Before relocating to Asheville, she taught at UC Berkeley Extension’s Post-Baccalaureate Art Studio program and San Francisco Art Institute for 20 years. Her artwork has been exhibited at the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley), UNC Asheville, Florida State University, California Institute of Integral Studies, and Stanford University.
