FEBRUARY 5, 12, 19, 26, MARCH 4, 11, 18, & 25 (make-up, if needed: APRIL 1)—Wednesdays, 6–8pm
In this eight-part class, explore the fundamentals of painting with oils. Strengthen your ability to understand the visual language employed by painters, and learn to speak the same language by developing work of your own. Working with both technique and theory, start with simple tonal studies and move towards full-color application. Works from the Museum’s Collection serve as examples of key drawing concepts, as well as a model for master copies.
Instructor Tony Corbitt, Jr. is a professional, self-taught artist living, working, and teaching in Asheville. Inspired by the French Masters of the late 19th century, he often favors plein air painting, emphasizing tonal relationships and sound draftsmanship with broad sweeps of a loaded brush. His inspiration is rooted in the American South; be it painting the Gulf Coast, sketching an alligator, or capturing the ever-changing shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains, he can usually be found outdoors, fully immersed in his surroundings.
Local and visiting artists help students of all levels and abilities develop skills in media that reflect techniques and themes featured in the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Classes are designed for anyone interested in exploring specific media in depth or introduce new media and processes.
