More Than Math: Professional Development for Teachers – POSTPONED

More Than Math integrates the visual arts into problem-based mathematics units developed for grades 3–8 drawn from the context of works of art in the Museum’s Collection. The workshops are led by Randy Harter, retired math specialist for Buncombe County Schools, and the Museum’s Education staff. More Than Math focuses on the importance of each student’s unique perspective in both mathematics and art, and explores analogous concepts including perspective, parallelism, symmetry, measurement, and geometric form.

- Saturday, May 16: Grades 6–8
These FREE workshops provide lesson plans and student activities; resource and classroom materials; free class fieldtrips; and CEU credits. Snacks, lunch, and refreshments are provided.

More Than Math
More Than Math is a program that integrates the visual arts into the 3rd through 8th grade mathematics curriculum using works of art from the Museum's Collection. More Than Math was developed in partnership with staff in the Museum's Education Department; Dr. Grayson Wheatley, professor emeritus of mathematics education, Florida State University; Randy Harter, math specialist, Buncombe County School District; and the School of Education at UNC Chapel Hill.
Classroom teachers of 3rd through 8th grade students are invited to take part in More Than Math workshops at the Museum. We provide teachers from each grade level with a lesson plan and access to website activities designed for their students. In the school year following their workshop, teachers and their students are provided with a complimentary field trip to the Museum for a guided tour and hands-on studio project.
