Dr. Deborah Belcher has performed as soloist and collaborative artist throughout the eastern US and in Canada. The Cleveland Plain Dealer praised the “lyrical expressiveness” of her playing, and The Grand Rapids Press stated that “Her playing breathes with believable emotional force.” Holding performance degrees from Winthrop, Indiana, and Michigan State Universities, she has also received grants and scholarships from the Presser Foundation, the Michigan Council for the Arts, and Michigan State University. She has taught at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and UNC Asheville. She maintains a vibrant studio of pre-college and adult students, and appears regionally as solo and collaborative pianist.
Carlton Alexander, Matthew Larkin, Hobart Whitman, and Leslie Zarnowski are members of the Asheville Wind Quintet and the Blue Ridge Symphony. Each is visible and active in teaching and/or contributing to the musical communities of Asheville and Hendersonville in a variety of events and venues.
For today’s program, Belcher returns to Pianoforte to perform solo works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Liszt, and is joined by members of the Asheville Wind Quintet for chamber music by Robert Schumann and Beethoven. This varied program spans the emotional scale from lyricism through drama to rollicking virtuosity.
