Somewhere Between Here and There: Cathryn Griffin

October 17, 2015 - January 24, 2016

Somewhere Between Here and There: Cathryn Griffin contains photographs of seemingly ordinary places and circumstantial events while revealing their poetic narratives. These stories, powerful and magical, are a constant theme in Griffin’s work. Curator of the exhibition and author of the catalogue Jon Jicha, Professor of Art at Western Carolina University, writes of the exhibition: “What we experience through photography is a collage of life – likenesses of people and places and objects. Referential shapes, colors and other indexical materiality are universally approachable. Yet, they speak uniquely to us through a quirky contextual vocabulary. The separation from these fixed attributes is what art making is about. Griffin’s repertoire of imagery shows us our collective souls and opens the door to unanswerable questions.”

Griffin received her Bachelor of Arts from Massachusetts College of Art and her MFA from Yale University. Her work is in the collections of the Asheville Art Museum, the Cameron Art Museum, NC and the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, MA. The exhibition will be hosted in three locations: the Western Carolina University Fine Art Museum (August – September), Asheville Art Museum (October – December) and East Tennessee State University Reece Museum (January – March 2016).

This exhibition is organized by The Fine Art Museum at Western Carolina University and curated by Jon Jicha.
