Frederic Remington (1861-1909) was born in Canton, New York, and moved to Ogdensburg, NY in 1873. He enrolled at the Vermont Episcopal Institute, Burlington in 1875 and then at Highland Military Academy, Worcester, Massachusetts in 1876. In 1878 Remington attended Yale College School of Art for three semesters. In 1881 he took his first vacation to the West and in 1882 Harper's Weekly published his first illustration (redrawn by staff). In 1883 he bought a sheep ranch near Peabody, Kansas.
