Joan Falconer Byrd (08/09/1939- ) was born in Cardiff, Wales. She taught in Sierra Leone, West Africa, with the Peace Corps (1963-1965). After earning her M.F.A., Byrd began teaching at Western Carolina University, where she is currently a Professor of Art and the Associate Department Head. She has shown her work in several competitive and invitational exhibitions throughout the east coast and in Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. She took the first glassblowing class to ever be taught at a University in the United States. She also wrote a published "Harvey K Littleton: A Life in Glass" a 208 page book on the founding of the glass movement.
