Lorna Simpson (1960- ) is a contemporary artist who often works in black and white photography, in combination with sculptural elements. Her art explores some of the perceptions and stereotypes about African-Americans and women. Simpson received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of California in San Diego. She has published work in Heresies and Lucy Lippard's Get The Message: A Decade of Art for Social Change. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Chase Manhatten Bank in New York City, The Department of Cultural Affairs in Chicago and many art museums world-wide. Among the awards that Simpson has received are the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, and numerous grants from the College Art Association, and the Polaroid Corporation.
