Vera Baker Williams

Vera Baker Williams (1927-2015), born in Hollywood, California, is an American children's writer and illustrator. Growing up, Williams' family moved to New York and, with the encouragement of her family, decided to pursue the arts. In 1949, Williams received her BFA in graphic design at Black Mountain College. Williams' work grew increasingly popular as she wrote and illustrated and, in 2004, she became the U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award, which is the highest recognition available to creators of children's books. In 2009, she was awarded the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature.
