Cynthia Bringle began her art studies intent on becoming a painter, only to fall in love with ceramics while taking a required clay class at the Memphis Academy of Art during her time as a student. Though she found her calling in a three-dimensional medium, the influence of painting, especially abstract and gestural, is often seen in the surface decoration of her vessels. Harvey Littleton’s invitation to create vitreographs returned Bringle to her interest in painting and representational imagery, visible in Dye Shed Porch, as she depicts a colorful, foliate scene of what is almost certainly the Dye Shed at Penland School of Craft, located near Littleton’s studio in Spruce Pine, NC. Bringle and her twin sister, Edwina, are both long-time members of the Penland community and the surrounding area.
Dye Shed Porch is on view in Stained with Glass: Vitreograph Prints from the Studio of Harvey K. Littleton through May 23, 2022.
