The Studies Building at Black Mountain College was designed by architect A. Lawrence Kocher and built by the students and faculty of Black Mountain College in 1940–1941. In this painting Ronald Robertson portrays the landscape in geometric and curvilinear forms outlined with black contours. The Building itself is pictured as a grouping of white rectangles at the bottom edge of the composition. Robertson used red to denote the strong energy he felt while at the school. The Studies Building is one of the last remaining buildings at Lake Eden, the site of Black Mountain College from 1940-1957.
