Wanda Shult Lea Austin commonly used brushed motifs inspired by nature in her functional ceramics, as seen on this vase. At Black Mountain College, Austin embraced the school’s collaborative spirit and connection to nature, eventually becoming one of the only Black Mountain College students to permanently settle in Western North Carolina; she resided in Celo Community, a communal land development founded upon the ideals of cooperation and care for the environment.
