Drop into our Studio to experiment freely and collaborate using different materials, tools, and techniques! We encourage attendees to visit a chosen artwork in the galleries for inspiration, then head to the Studio to create. All ages and abilities are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult).
Using still life floral arrangements and imagery of botanicals and animals, visitors to the April Makerspace will capture the essence of Appalachian Flora & Fauna by creating a one-of-a-kind watercolor image. Integrating crisp details and vivid colors, guests will leave with works that pay tribute to Sallie Middleton, a native Appalachian who channeled her love of the surrounding region, inspiring her to capture the beauty that lives within these mountains.
Aspen has been finding ways to honor the magic of nature through their art as long as they can remember. Getting a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Development allowed them to bring new meaning to their art, in bringing awareness to the ever-present threat of climate change. They believe that as society is introduced to various ways to engage with, and experience nature, they will be more compelled to take the necessary steps to protect the fragile natural systems that surround us and support our ability to thrive. Since graduating, Aspen has found various ways to share the magic of science and nature through creative practice, by being a lead preschool teacher to an arts-focused preschool program, leading botanical watercolor workshops, and teaching environmental art-based classes to after school programs in the Asheville area.
