Burton Philip Silverman (1928- ) is a painter who works in the realistic tradition. He attended the Art Students League, Pratt Institute, and Columbia University. He has earned several awards for his work, including a gold medal from the American Watercolor Society and the Altman Figure Prize from the National Academy of Design. His work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Silverman's work is based on direct observation of the world, and has been greatly influenced by the work of Rembrandt and Eakins. He has also incorporated elements of Degas and Lautrec in his work. He works both in oil and watercolor, and has a special interest in depicting figures. Silverman is well known for his spontaneous, painterly style.
