Saul Kovner (1904-1981) was born in Russia. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City with Ivan Olinsky, Charles Hawthorne, and William Auerbach-Levy. He was an etcher, lithographer, and painter who was in the New York W.P.A. graphic arts division. He was a member of the Society of American Engravers, and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Morton Gallery. During the 1920s and 1930s Kovner taught art classes and created paintings, prints, and drawings of city streets and people in his studio near Central Park.
