Susan Crile (1942- ) was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Primarily a painter, her works are included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, the Hirshhorn Museum, and New York University among many others. Her paintings and prints reflect her interest in pattern as well as abstraction. Her abstract paintings are often turbulent, such as the series "The Fires of War" that depict the oil fires in Kuwait. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant in 1972, Resident Award , American Academy in Rome, 1990 and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1982 and 1989. She has taken part in over forty solo and numerous group exhibitions on a continuous basis throughout her career.
