Jean Wall Penland ( - ) is a painter and etcher whose work has been exhibited in over twenty solo shows throughout North Carolina and in England for over some 35 years. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions throughout the east coast. She has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation. Penland also received a Best In Show at the Martha's Vineyard All-Island Show in 1983, and a First Prize in the First National Bank Show in Asheville, NC in 1970. She was the Art Director for "The Arts Journal" in Asheville from 1978-1989. Penland's work is in several permanent collections including the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, the Biltmore Estate, Carolina Power and Light, Duke University, and Rockwell International.
