Jack Tworkov (1900 - 1982) was born in Biala Podlaska, Russian Empire. In 1913, he immigrated to the US with his mother and younger sister. He received a BA in 1923 from Columbia University in the hopes of becoming a writer but soon turned his interested to the fine arts after discovering paintings by Cézanne and Matisse. He studied at the National Academy of Design in 1923 and the Art Student's League from 1925 to 1926. Tworkov was a founding member of the new York School and is considered to be one of the great artists along with Jackson Pollick and Franz Kline.
