Elizabeth Matheson

Elizabeth Matheson (1942- ) was born in Hillsborough, North Carolina.  Through her photography, she seeks to explore poignancy, stillness, and the relationship between things.  Her photographs are often haunting depictions of landscapes that feature contrasting dreamlike images. She has been in exhibitions from North Carolina to Rome, Italy, including solo shows at Duke, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Lenoir Arts Council, St. John's Museum, and Hollins College.  Her group exhibitions have been in various venues including the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Palazzo Venezia in Rome, and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Matheson received the Southeast Seven SECCA/NEA grant in 1977. Her photographs are part of the permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Ackland Museum at the University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill, and the Asheville Art Museum.  She is presently living in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
