Getting Creative with Lines and Color

April 7, 2020

Kenneth Noland was a Color Field painter. His work is characterized by large areas of flat color. He achieved this by using paint to stain the canvas. Can you create a work of art similar to this one using materials you have at home?

What could you use? Can you choose your own colors?

Questions for Engagement

What do you see in this artwork?
What shapes?
What Colors?

Materials

Colored tape
Colored paper
Scissors

Activity

Choose one piece of paper as your background, then choose 3-5 colors of paper and 3-5 colors of tape. (If you don’t have colored tape, use colored paper and glue.)

  • Cut colored stripes of paper to create your strips. You could vary width, but keep them the same length.
  • Arrange your strips on your background paper.
  • Once you are satisfied with your arrangement, use colored tape to carefully tape strips to your background paper.
  • As you tape you are creating a “tape stripe” and a “paper stripe.” The tape will clean up the edges of your paper stripes to correct any wavy cutting.
